Police in CA Murder Oscar Grant on Camera

The LA Times has the story:

Graphic video of Oscar J. Grant III’s death at an Oakland train station has roiled emotions in the Bay Area, leading to a demonstration at Bay Area Rapid Transit district headquarters and calls for more oversight of the agency’s police force.

The family of the 22-year-old father, who was shot to death by a BART police officer early on New Year’s Day, filed a $25-million wrongful death claim against the agency Tuesday.

…Grant had been celebrating New Year’s Eve in San Francisco and was heading back to his East Bay home on a BART train when a fight broke out between two groups of riders about 2 a.m.

BART police met the train at Oakland’s Fruitvale station and ordered passengers — including Grant — onto the platform.

Video taken by spectators with cellphones shows a chaotic scene, with uniformed officers pulling riders out of a train and then shoving one man onto the ground. With the man face down, an officer stands over him, draws his gun and shoots.

…According to the claim filed Tuesday, Grant was unarmed “and offered no physical resistance” to BART officers.

“Mr. Grant, fearing for his life, made a valiant effort to de-escalate the situation by appealing to the officer’s sense of humanity, telling the officer that he had a four-year-old daughter and asking the officer not to taze him,” the claim said. “Witnesses recount that Mr. Grant continuously repeated this prayer for relief to no avail.”

  1. Why has this officer not been charged with murder? If Mr. Grant had of shot the officer would he have been questioned and charged with murder by now? What is the police dept. waiting on? We don’t need the media to feed us another bunch of crap when we all can see the Video for ourselves. We need the police department to do what they are paid and sworn to do. Is it another case about money who has the most to buy justice? Why did the other officers not arrest this officer right then? They should be held as associates to the killing they should be tried as well. When one person pulls a gun in a bank hold up do they charge the get a way driver as well? The difference is all of these men are sworn to up hold the law. And this murder is plain for all to see. What possible way can anyone say it was not murder? CHARGE them all.

  2. Cowardly high school educated swine like Johannes Mehserle should never be allowed to carry a gun or leave his front yard.

Disgusting display of humanity, I hope someone shows Mr. Mehserle the same sympathy someday.

He should be locked up in prison for the rest of his days, and every coward accomplice officer standing should also have charges brought against them for allowing and aiding in the murder of a completely innocent man. This was cold blooded murder, hands down.

And $25M will not bring his family peace. His daughter will never have a father. America, what is wrong with us?

  3. Have to agree…they put uneducated egotistical idiots in postions of authority and expect something good to happen…isn’t that the definition of insanity?

I hope he gets charged with murder. I feel bad for his kids though…they need to go through life now without a father while he spends his life in prison. Say Hi to “Bubba”

  4. I saw this on the news Sat. I live near bart and could not believe it. I have heard about this kind of stuff but to see it unfold in front of my eyes was awful. I truly cried when I saw it. Something has to be done it is so scary. Rest in Peace Young Man.

  5. TACO: “Why has this officer not been charged with murder? If Mr. Grant had of shot the officer would he have been questioned and charged with murder by now?”

Right? What I want to know is, what are the rules for on-duty officers who commit major crimes? Why aren’t they arrested, charged with a crime, and etc like any other person? Does that all wait while the PD determines whether there was wrong-doing or not? Because public, cold-blooded murder like that seems to REQUIRE immediate arrest, from a moral standpoint.

There is no defending what Mr. Mehserle did, but suggesting that it’s because he didn’t attend college doesn’t make sense. One can be a law-abiding citizen without going to college.

“every coward accomplice officer standing should also have charges brought against them for allowing and aiding in the murder of a completely innocent man.”

    I agree!
